Bangs Mkt is closing. There has been a store at the northwest corner of Race and 14th Street for over 100 years. The current proprietors have owned the store since the 1980s. Once a true corner grocery with a wide selection and deli counter, it has evolved into a pony keg type place that just sells snacks, malt liquor and cheap wine. The building is going to be rehabbed as part of the second phase of OTRCH's City Home project. After this month, if you still need to get your fortified wine, there is a newer store of this type that opened last year at 1546 Elm, ...or there is always Kroger's.

Retail spaces are a thorny problem, aren't they? It would certainly be nice to have some of the Korean groceries that make Capitol Hill in D.C. such a walkable place. The groceries are small but complete and always immaculate.
The sad thing is that this neighborhood should be the perfect place for corner stores like this one. I can understand its selection of alcohol and snacks, if that's what its clientele seeks. I have also hoped that these stores would step up and be open to modifying their selection as the clientele shifts. So far, the only place that seems at all responsive is Garfield Market [at least, there I've seen evidence of the owners taking suggestions and making changes]. I would love to have a couple of closer options for my staples, like Bang's.
and here I was, all excited thinking that Bang was closing....

Casey LOL
If Bang closed who would we make fun of for over the top pretentiousness?
