Where Is This

Can anyone guess where this building with guy doing a squat-thrust is?

Hint: It is in the second best neighborhood in the City...

UPDATE:
OK, I guess that was too hard. This is the Cincinnati Bell Building (ca: 1924) at the Northwest Corner of Hamilton and Westmoreland in Northside.

Millcreek Jungle

One thing I like about the Midwest is that the vegetation just seems to take over forgotten places like a jungle. Despite being lined with concrete and fenced-off from pedestrians, the historically polluted Millcreek River is surrounded by a growing jungle of weeds and sometimes wildlife. If you can ever get close enough, you will see that despite being relegated to a flood control device by the Army Corps of Engineers and despite being surrounded by freeways and industry turtles, birds and fish are common here:

Take the Cake

OK, posts are slowing to a trickle here at CityKin for the holidays, but I had to make a post about Take the Cake. I had a post a few months ago about their new diggs in Northside.

Take the Cake started on Main Street many years ago, up near Liberty Street. They moved to Northside and now moved again, closer to Knowlton's Corner, into their own, larger space at 4035 Hamilton Avenue. Frankly, I had never visited the place before, because it is not that often that I need a cake, and I never even thought about entering. However I learned through Twitter, that last month, they began serving lunches and brunches. On a whim, I took the family to visit Sunday, and we were served this:

I'll let my wife describe:

Everything was quite delicious and well done. The biscuits and gravy had a spicy little kick to it. The fritatta was unbelievably creamy and fluffy and the potatoes were excellent. The French toast bread pudding was not at all dense and heavy as many tend to be and it was topped with lots of berries and whipped cream. The only thing I didn't try was the steak and eggs cuz I was stuffed but it looked great. Best brunch I've been to in the city!

Now, my wife is a very tough restaurant critic. When she says best brunch, you better believe it. The entrees were priced at about $7, and there are two large communal tables and counter seating. The items are listed on a blackboard and erased as they sell out. The value and quality are unsurpassed. The chefs here are the owners, and they are truly talented. You gotta try this.

Take the Cake Before After

Next to Cluxton Alley Coffee Roasters, is "Take the Cake". They were once located on Main Street in OTR.

I have a before picture of this building somewhere, but couldn't find it tonight. So I got the before picture from the Hamilton County Auditor site. It was just a concrete block facade. I'm not sure who did the design or paid for the new facade, but they did a great job:

Cluxton Alley Coffee Roasters

Cluxton Alley Coffee Roasters is a hidden business in the rear of a building in the first block of Hamilton Avenue from Knowlton's corner, near Blue Rock. The owner, Jan is a long-time Northside resident who studied coffee roasting and established this business last year in the rear of her building. The coffee is excellent and it is becoming a daytime gathering spot. She sells roasted coffee beans and also has local artwork on display, notably that of Nicola Mason, the editor of the Cincinnati Review (an excellent publication, more on that later). Get your coffee beans here, you will return, I guarantee:

Lego Pride

It's tough to find LGBT Lego, but this model, entitled "Rainbow Warriors" actually got the colors in the proper order, and shows impressive detail right down to the lavender flight suits.

Even Lego neighborhoods support diversity, flying the flag to support their LGBT brothers and sisters. This scene almost looks like downtown Northside. All of us here at CityKin want to wish Porkopolis' LGBT community a happy and successful festival and parade, "Squealin' with Pride in '09".

Team Lego marches in the San Diego Pride Parade.

Sunday the weather finally broke warm, and on the way home from canvassing, we stopped at this peaceful playground in Northside. The play equipment is so-so, but the site is nice with trees and a nice perimeter fence. Lots of kids out as the sun was setting.

Northside - Hot?

Somehow I missed this article Sunday, about rising property values in Northside. Sometimes I wish I lived in Northside. Great place to raise a family (or dogs as per the article). They got it going on.
