Zephyr

This band never really made it big, but for some reason, I was turned on to them a long time a long time ago. I just read up on the band on the internet and foud out that the singer, Candy Givens died in 1984.

...Boulder, Colorado, in the fall of 1968, was the gateway to the Rockies for thousands of people leaving the East and West to look for a cleaner, more rewarding life. Nowadays, Boulder is a cute little Disneylandesque example of why homosexuals shouldn’t plan cities, but twenty years ago it still had a couple of rough edges left. The popular bands in town were the Leopold Fuchs Hate Band and Black Pearl. Drugs, parachutes, skis, mountain climbing gear, motorcycles, and waterbeds were the popular recreational toys of the day...

...We played about half-way down the bill on the first night. It was just before sunset. The city powers-that-were had prepared for bloody, Communist inspired riots: plenty of cops on hand. There were a dozen or so street freaks who wanted to get in for free; you know, “music belongs to The People” types, gathered on a little hill just outside the stadium. They were typical noisy jerks, drunk, who are probably now the sportscasters on your local talk radio station...

James Brown - It's A Mother

I picked up this album many years ago at Ferguson Flea market. There was a drive-in theater on Ferguson Avenue, and on Saturdays in the summer they would have flea markets. There is a Walmart there now.

With song titles like Mother Popcorn Part I, Mother Popcorn Part II, Mashed Potato Popcorn how could you go wrong? This record rocks. And it was all recorded at Cincinnati's own King Records.

Sid Bass worked for Muzak, and recorded on RCA's budget label "Vik". This album circa 1956:

Music reminds me of a 50's TV show.

Yma Sumac Legend of the Jivaro

Very strange album. If you look through old record bins like I do, you quickly see that there was a strong fascination with exotic jungle locales in the 1950s. Hawaiian, Cuban, and South American music was the subject of millions of albums. This one is a bit more exotic than most, being the music of HEADHUNTERS! (See she is looking in horror at a shrunken head)

This is not a record you would listen to very often. Once was enough for me.

Julie London Album

Another yard sale find. I bought this circa 1955 album because of the odd look on Julie London's face. I kinda remember her from the TV show Emergency!, but just read her Wikipedia entry which notes she was a WWII Pinup girl and wife of Jack Webb (Dragnet). The record is actually very good. Smooth, jazzy, torchy:

Octav Records was in Elmwood Place, near or perhaps the same place as Vernon McIntyre's Old Time Music (now moved to Wapokaneta, OH) and before that was it Jimmie Skinner Music Center, at 1300 Vine and before that at 222 E. Fifth Street?)
