CAC Monday Night Crafts

One Night One Craft at the Contemporary Arts Center

Here are the Monday night events for the rest of the summer. Some of the classes would be great for kids, and a lot of families are making free admission Mondays a regular family visit, so you are likely to meet other downtowner families. Classes are Mondays 6-8pm and although as always, Mondays are free admission, some of the classes have a $5 material fee. I've heard rumors that there is a cash bar at some of these events:

June 27th 6-8pm Book Making Bonanza!
Make your own journal or sketchbook with a few simple instructions from local artist Annie Stephens.

July 11th Paint Your Yoga
Yoga instructor, Ann Ducharme, will guide us through simple yoga asanas (postures), and then show us how to translate those poses through painting with sumi-e ink using meditative strokes.

July 18th Seed Bombs!
Join the people behind VisuaLingual as they help you explore your inner guerilla gardener through the creation of seed bombs.

July 25th From Ply to Play
Woodworking enthusiasts, Joel Armor and Joe Civitello, employ combinations of both traditional and non-traditional woodworking methods for functional furnishings with an emphasis on repurposing materials. In this week’s class, the boys will ensure that no materials go to waste as they turn wood scraps into crafty works of art using image transfer techniques. Feel free to bring small Xerox images of your liking.

August 1st Mud Cloth (Bogolanfini Modified)
Fiber artist and 2001 Post Corbett Award winner Judy Dominic will teach you a dying technique based on the traditional black and white dyeing technique of bogolan fini (mud cloth) from Mali, West Africa. See what sorts of colors you can coax out of the various dirt and clay of our area. Bring a white shirt (100% natural fiber - cotton, linen, ramie; prewashed, no softener in wash or dry), some dirt from your yard or wherever you see a nice dirt color and an old newspaper. Feel free to contact the instructor with questions: judy at judydominic dot com
Shirts will be on sale in the UnMuseum that day.

August 8th Stick 'em Up
Are you tired of postcards falling off your refrigerator because they're being held up by wimpy magnets? Well, have a beer or a pop and save the cap. The ladies from the Cincy Craft Cartel will show you how to make magnets using bottle caps and your favorite images. Bring your own materials to make it personal or use some of ours!

August 15th Henna Tattoos
Always wanted a tattoo but wanted the freedom of a temporary one? Learn the traditional Indian art of temporary Henna (Mehndi) tattoo designs from artist Sneha Nirody, who has been classically trained and creating Henna designs exclusively for brides and wedding parties for over 10 years.

August 22nd Paper Craft
Join Jessica Wolf of local craft company Paper Acorn for a surprise craft session. Her handmade paperwork was featured in Martha Stewart’s Summer 2010 Wedding Magazine and she is well known for the creation of intricate paper boxes, luminaries, and garlands. Come see what surprise she has in store for you.

Happy Worst Day Ever

A new play, Happy Worst Day Ever, by Arlelen Hutton, winner of the 2010 Macy's New Play Prize will be performed at Emanuel Community Center Gym, Oct 30th, 3pm.

Recommended for grades 3 to 6 and completely free!

A Description:
A world premiere play written for the Cincinnati Playhouse in Park by the noted playwright of Last Train to Nibroc: Happy Worst Day Ever is the story of a birthday party that doesn't happen, an unexpected upset on a favorite TV talent show, and an unlikely friendship with the most popular girl in the fourth grade and the nerdiest boy in school, who have more in common than they imagined.

"Had Arlene Hutton been around during Broadway's Golden Age, her finely wrought plays might rank with those of William Inge or Horton Foote. Among postmodern dramatists, Hutton stands apart, relying on traditional techniques in an era where such values grow ever rarer."

Rikki Tikki Tavi Friday at Emmanuel

The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park's production of THE GARDEN OF RIKKI-TIKKI-TAVI adapted by Y York from Rudyard Kipling will perform "Off the Hill"

Friday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m.
Emmanuel Community Center, 1308 Race St
Tickets: Free, Call 513-241-2563, Jenny Mendelson

This free-flowing comic brawl is a loose adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's classic children's tale RIKKI-TIKKI-TAVI. Darzee, the diva tailor bird, is incensed when Rikki Tikki Tavi, a young mongoose, washes up in her pristine garden. Darzee and her friend, Chuchu, pull out all the stops in their attempt to run off the pesky mongoose until they see that Nag, a cobra and the garden despot, runs in fear at the sight of a mongoose on the loose. This comedy about sharing and cooperation has received numerous productions across the country. Award-winning playwright Y York is known for her adaptations of contemporary children's classics.

"In this production of THE GARDEN OF RIKKI-TIKKI-TAVI, we hope to instill in each child the valuable life lessons that come with this classic tale, in a way that they can understand, have fun with and laugh at," says Playhouse in the Park Education Director Mark Lutwak. "We are very excited to introduce the Playhouse to a new generation and make professional live theatre more accessible to our neighborhoods across the region."

Opening Day Today

Bunting is all hung. Ready for a celebration:

27 March 2010

Opening Day

I've been out of town and out of touch so much this Spring Break, that I'm not even sure if it is begining to feel like Spring yet in Cincy. But one event means springtime more than any other in Cincinnati, and that is Opening Day. Unfortunately, because of the greed of the professional sport, Opening Day is sometimes in March, usually meaning a cold wet and generally depressing spectacle, especially for people like myself who don't really care for professional sports. But, I do love a good parade, and Opening Day is a fine Cincinnati tradition. I'll be sitting on Race Street sidewalk, as usual, and I hope to see you all there. Monday April 5th, 11am.

Wendell Berry, Wes Jackson and Gene Lodgson

This is a few months away, but think it is pretty significant to get these 3 guys together in one place:

Wendell Berry and Wes Jackson and Gene Logsdon
Sunday, April 11, 2010, 7:00 pm
“An Informal Conversation”
Co-sponsored by the UC's President's Advisory Council on Environment and Sustainability and the Brueggeman Center for Dialogue

Wendell Berry is a Kentucky farmer and writer, described by the New York Review of Books as “perhaps the great moral essayist of our day.” He is the author of more than forty novels, anthologies of essays, and books of poetry that use his intimate knowledge of his Kentucky River farm home as the starting point for eloquent and penetrating critiques of the modern agricultural system and its consequences for communities, families, and politics. Wes Jackson is the President and co-founder of the Land Institute in Salina, Kansas, a research and demonstration center dedicated to developing polyculture perennial grains as an alternative to our current annual grain monocultures. Gene Logsdon farms in northern Ohio and has written numerous books and magazine articles on the subject of small farms, rural living, cottage farming, homesteading, alternative farming practices, organic gardening, composting, aquaculture, and other types of alternative agriculture.

All lectures are held in the Cintas Center and are free and open to the public.

Our neighbors, Mike and Maya, also known as Visualingual, have produced a print that represents the 1200 block of Vine Street. Sale of this print will benefit the Contact Center, which is located at 1225 Vine (closeup of this building shown above). This Saturday 6-9pm at MiCA 12/v, there is a reception/launch party for the print. I am very fond of this block and think the print is excellent. I will be there, hope to see you.

More Balluminaria

We went to Balluminaria again this year, and the weather was better, so the crowd was bigger. How do I know this? By the very scientific observation that we arrived sooner this year, and parked farther away.

The event involves the lighting of Hot Air Balloons around Mirror Lake in Eden Park. It lasts from 4 pm to 6 pm with the sun setting around 5:30 pm.

When we arrived not all the balloons were up. The only concession stand I saw was totally slammed (for a veteran move, bring your own food). They also had a brass band playing just north of the lake:

For a while there was a nice Toddler mosh pit around the brass band.

This is the event where I came up with a new term. Photog Widow, this is the spouse of someone who deserts the family to get pictures of an event, and it described my poor wife. She however didn't seem to mind (and I did ask permission first). The event is kind of one big photo opportunity, and they give you a countdown to when all the balloons fire up. Luckily this happens multiple times. Here was my best shot this year:

I really like this event, but getting there is always an exercise in frustration. It's a shame the rails hidden under the median on Gilbert don't still carry streetcars, it would be a great way to get there. I hope they add additional concession stands in the future, though my take-away is to bring your own food or, gosh, go a whole 2 hours without eating!

A local photographer put together a really nice time-lapse video of the event, focused on the balloons. It is a testament to the fabulous visuals that I didn't even mind the way overused soundtrack. I'd even go so far to say it worked really well with the video.

Fireworks

Went to the Riverfront for the big event for the first time in many many years. It struck me as a more staid affair than I remember. I didn't see any drugs, no people climbing the light poles or jumping off the ice-breakers (not that I even got that close to the river this time). There were lots of families and a routine feel to the happening. One benefit of living Downtown for events like this is that we just walk down about an hour before the event:
