They can, actually, but not very well. The wild ones can fly just enough to get up into a tree at night to avoid nocturnal predators. In daytime they mostly forage for food on foot. Farm-raised turkeys are engineered for bulk, and can't get their fat asses off the ground at all. Perhaps Ben Franklin was right about nominating it to be the national bird.
Some of you are too young to remember WKRP. Back in the early 80's, before Cincinnati was nationally known for race riots, it was known for this silly sitcom. And there was no episode more famous than this Thanksgiving thriller. Anyone you know who's in their late thirties or early forties will remember this vividly. Enjoy.

Gary Sandy, the guy who played Travis was in a play at the Ensemble Theater last year (Mack and Mabel), and not until after the show did I realize who he was. He put on a good show.
That's great! I'm old enough to remember the reruns, but not this episode.
When we told people on the east coast we were moving to Cincy, I can't tell you how many people's first reactions had to do with WKRP. (I guess better that than the Bungles.)
I was definitely a WKRP rerun kid. I liked the Les Nessman eyewitness weather reports where he stood at the window and beat his chest to make it sound like he was in a helicopter...
I see a lot of wild turkeys flying up north, not the most graceful thing you have ever seen, but the amazing thing is to see such a large bird perched up in the tree tops.

Friend of mine was in the Mack and Mabel production with Gary Sandy, which was a fabulously fun play, and said he was great to work with. I wish we could have a WKRP--it was a great little station.
Hilarious video...Keith Olberman actually used this on his show during a segment where he was poking fun at Sarah Palin's turkey pardon mishaps. Funny stuff.
