Millcreek Jungle

One thing I like about the Midwest is that the vegetation just seems to take over forgotten places like a jungle. Despite being lined with concrete and fenced-off from pedestrians, the historically polluted Millcreek River is surrounded by a growing jungle of weeds and sometimes wildlife. If you can ever get close enough, you will see that despite being relegated to a flood control device by the Army Corps of Engineers and despite being surrounded by freeways and industry turtles, birds and fish are common here:

If you squint, you can see why the original locals called the Mill Creek Mahketewah, meaning (I believe) beautiful river.

Don't know if you make it out to Pleasant Ridge / Kennedy Heights often, but have you seen the 6 - 8' high concrete flood wall they are building there along Duck Creek Rd. at Kennedy? Seriously ugly, and I don't think there's enough clear land between it and the road to support any vegetation/cover.

yes, I have been watching that thing being built. Seems like it will channel the extra stormwater that has been generated by Home Depot and Biggs oversized parking lots and save a few dozen businesses from flooding. This is a perfect example of taxpayers funding destructive sprawl.

pretty sure Maketewah means He is black or It is black. Dunno if the area indians used gender like those crazy Europeans do.
