Smitty's Fire

This morning, firefighters are still working on Smitty's to make sure the fire is totally out. This was the kind of building that probably had lots of jerry-rigged electric, so I wouldn't be suprised if the cause was electrical. Sad to see a long time business like this ruined. Apparently one of the Smith brothers was on TV this morning saying he would re-open somewhere else. So building by building, year by year, fire by demo by rehab the neighborhood continues to transform into something new...

I wonder how this will affect the rehabs going on.
Easier, harder, impossible now?

Can't imagine it hurting any of the rehab projects. If anything the owner of buildings would be eager them. I'm sure 3cdc would love to pick up a few more buildings on that block.

I don't think it will directly affect the rehabs that are happening just to the south.

I do suspect that 3CDC will try to acquire the buildings now, but you never know, Smitty may hold onto them or try to raze them and leave a vacant lot.

I've wondeered lately how they stayed open, as I never see customers there. But I thought they added character to Vine and am sorry to see them go.

It'll be interesting to see what the cause of the fire winds up being. A quick check on CAGIS shows no permits of any kind for 1425, 1431, or 1433 since they went online in 1999. Has Smitty made any modifications lately?

Even if he hasn't, usually the annual fire dept. inspection flags the kind of BS that usually results in electrical fires.

^What Smitty sold cannot be found in many other stores, that's for sure. The clothes were not my style, but I can appreciate them. My kids always laughed at some shirts in their window with the label "Weird Daddy"
