Eat Grease Live Longer

"Doctors Say So"

Alabama Fish Bar, Liberty and Race Street, OTR.

I had food here again, against my better judgement. They offer 3 kinds of fish, Cod, Whiting, and Perch, all deep fried for 5.99 or 6.99. The "meal" includes fries and two slices of the cheapest white-bread. Plus they will pile on cooked onions and peppers if that is what you like. It is quick, local and tastes pretty good. But you won't be able to forget you ate there for the next day or so. Kinda sticks with you in the same way White Castle does.

I forswear this place for at least the next year.

Alabama's is not just a place to eat, it's an institution. I may be mistaken, but didn't Alabama's weather the riots without one broken window even though the Shell Station and Kentucky Fried on the same street took a lickin'?

They could burn down all of downtown and Alabama's would not be touched. People would be standing there the next day, ID in one hand a bottle of hot sauce in the other waiting for their free birthday meal.

It is such a bare-bones operation. I met the owner before he started it, and he knew exactly what kind of place he wanted to make. No place to sit, hell, barely even any place to wait for your food, and the simplest menu ever seen. The prices, servings and decor has not changed one iota since he opened over ten years ago.
