Quiet Reflection on the Day

There was a poem I wanted to write
It was forming in my mind
when my son yelled at his sister

There was rat I killed this morning
Jumped out of the garbage then down my leg
The damn flashlight was dead from kids clicking it

There is an old broom I keep under the stairs
And I swept the rat hard out across the tiles
He bounce against the wall and out onto the street

There was life in his eyes as he lay on the asphalt
And I was thinking how I liked this little rat
as the sedan tire rolled over him

Sickly Fascinated

Children Unrepentant Sociopaths

New Study Reveals Most Children Unrepentant Sociopaths

MINNEAPOLIS—A study published Monday in The Journal Of Child Psychology And Psychiatry has concluded that an estimated 98 percent of children under the age of 10 are remorseless sociopaths with little regard for anything other than their own egocentric interests and pleasure...

Late Night TV

OK, I know this is pretty irrelevant to this blog and to life in general, but I find the Conan/Leno debate kinda interesting. I never watch prime-time TV, but I often watch the late shows. That's when the kids are asleep and I have finished cleaning the kitchen and blogging etc. Personally, I prefer Jimmy Kimmel. His monologue sometime is hilarious. Craig Ferguson I also like. Conan is also good, but I never have liked Jay Leno. I can barely stand watching his show. You? Vote in my poll on the sidebar.

Electrical Testing Method

From The Electrician's Handbook, 1928:

Electricians often test circuits for the presence of voltage by touching the conductors with the fingers. This method is safe where voltage does not exceed 250 and is often very convenient for locating a blown-out fuse or for ascertaining whether or not a circuit is alive. Some men can endure the electric shock that results without discomfort whereas others cannot. Therefore, the method is not feasible in some cases. Which are the outside wires and which is the neutral wire of a 110-220 volt, 3-wire system can be determined in this way by noting the intensity of the shock that results by touching different pairs of wires with the fingers. Use the method with caution wan be certain that the voltage of the circuit does not exceed 250 before touching the conductors

The presence of low voltages can be determined by "tasting". The method is feasible only where the pressure is but a few volts and hence is usde only in bell and signal work. Where the voltage is very low, the bared ends of the conductors are held a short distance apart on the tongue. if voltage is present a peculiar mildly burning sensation results which sill never be forgotten after one has experienced it. The "taste" is due to the electrolytic decomposition of the liquids on the tongue...

Forced Together Time with Prison Walls

Happy Father's Day

Temporary prison-like walls built around a subdivision for a reality TV show:
e>...the network built 2,000 feet of stark 20-foot tall walls around eight homes in a Kennesaw subdivision, walls that resemble the outside of a maximum-security penitentiary...

...eight families in those homes will be trapped in their own homes for about three weeks, blocked by said wall. If they leave, they relinquish the chance to win an unspecified large cash prize...

...the concept is that suburban families lead such rushed, disparate lives, they don’t spend enough time together. This show will force them to do so. Dad can’t go off and play golf. The kids can’t go to ballet class or karate lessons. Mom can’t hit the mall.

As a footnote, apparently this is in the same community that made gun ownership mandatory for all households and is the same town that elected Newt Gingrich and refused to allow public transit inside.
