McCain is thinking like it is still the 20th century.
He thinks the solution to high gas prices is a better car battery and subsidies for ethanol. Does his proposal attempt to solve the problem, or only the symptom? Are gas prices the problem, or is our auto-dependent sprawling pattern of development and lack of public transit the real problem? Ethanol and electric cars are only treating the symptoms, IMO.
I think it's a step in the right direction (for our current habits), but obviously rail is where our habits should be. I really wish he would commit full force to it.
ReplyDeleteGood point about problems vs. symptoms. The analogy I often use is that it's like treating hemophilia by investing in more band-aids rather than research.
